Renters guide
Restricted dog breeds & renters insurance in North Carolina
If a national carrier told you no because of your dog, you're not out of options.
Most large renters insurance carriers keep a "restricted breeds" list. If your dog is on it, the policy either excludes dog-bite liability or you get declined outright. It's an underwriting shortcut based on national claims data — not a judgment about your dog. But it leaves plenty of responsible NC renters without coverage.
Breeds commonly excluded by standard renters policies
- •Pit Bulls (American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Terriers)
- •Rottweilers
- •Doberman Pinschers
- •German Shepherds
- •Chow Chows
- •Akitas
- •Presa Canarios
- •Cane Corsos
- •Wolf hybrids
- •Siberian Huskies & Alaskan Malamutes (some carriers)
Every carrier's list is a little different, and some rate by "mixed breed with any restricted breed in the mix." That's how a rescue mutt ends up denied.
What "restricted" actually means on a policy
Two things usually happen. First, the carrier declines to write renters insurance for the household. Second — and this catches people — the policy is issued but the personal liability section excludes any claim involving the restricted breed. If your dog nips a delivery driver, that bill is on you.

What dog breeds are not covered by renters insurance in NC?
Most national carriers publish a 'restricted breeds' list that typically includes Pit Bulls (American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Terriers), Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherds, Chow Chows, Akitas, Presa Canarios, Cane Corsos, Wolf hybrids, and sometimes Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes. If your dog is on that list, standard renters policies either exclude dog-bite liability or decline the policy entirely.
Why do insurance companies restrict dog breeds?
It's an underwriting shortcut based on national bite-claim data, not a judgment about your individual dog. It saves the carrier from investigating each pet — and it costs responsible NC renters coverage they need.
Can I get renters insurance in Charlotte with a Pit Bull or Rottweiler?
Yes. Capital Insurance Agency writes a renters policy with no dog breed restrictions of any kind. Every breed is accepted and liability coverage still applies if your dog causes an injury.
Does having a 'restricted' breed make my renters insurance more expensive?
With our HO-4 renters program, no — pricing does not change based on breed. You get the same guaranteed $95K contents and $300K liability whether you have a Chihuahua or a Cane Corso.
